5.0         Phillip Cu-Unjieng (The Philippine Star)

“The care, the attention to detail and the commitment to produce a quality film all combine to make this a film we owe ourselves as Filipinos to watch and learn from.” (Read full review)

4.0         Maridol Rañoa-Bismarck (Yahoo Philippines)

“More than its breathtaking cinematography,  well-choreographed fight scenes,  haunting music and brilliant acting, El Presidente is about the triumph of good over evil.” (Read full review)

3.5          Rito Asilo (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

“The historical drama’s boldly imaginative take on the power struggle between Aguinaldo and Andres Bonifacio (the award-worthy Cesar Montano) is riveting, but its protracted running time and dark visuals compromise its viewability and commercial appeal.” (Read full review)

3.0         Rianne Hill Soriano (Yahoo Voices)

El Presidente is not a perfect film. But in the end, it still shines as a passionate attempt to contribute something valuable for Philippine cinema.” (Read full review)

3.0         Emilia Narni J. David (Business World)

“What the movie does well is usher the audience into the history often ignored by students.” (Read full review)

3.o          Ivan6655321 (IMDB User)

El Presidente, although admittedly a grand, sweeping production, is a very clunky film that offers little to nothing that our history text books have not taught us yet.” (Read full review)

2.5          Philbert Dy (Click the City)

“The gumption is admirable, and its interpretation of history is intriguing. But taken as a whole, it ends up feeling bloated and awkward.” (Read full review)

2.5          Nicol Latayan (Tit for Tat)

“The technical achievements were mostly good to horribly bad, and the screentime is difficult to sit through.” (Read full review)

2.5          Ivan Thoughts

“El Presidente” never quite connects on the emotional level. Instead, and this is quite saddening, it merely gives out the occasional ‘wow’ factor with its action set pieces, mammoth scope and nothing more.” (Read full review)

2.0          Carljoe Javier (Rappler)

El Presidente is flawed. Individual scenes and sequences can be gripping, but the overall film suffers from sprawl and lack of a narrative drive.” (Read full review)

2.0          Rina Jimenez-David (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

“My biggest beef against El Presidente is its reliance on art direction and CGI images over character and substance. True, it may have gotten its settings and costumes just right (don’t get me started on makeup), but do we come away from the movie with an insight into the character of Aguinaldo, admittedly one of Philippine history’s most neglected, underrated and unfairly judged heroes?” (Read full review)

1.5          Zig Marasigan (Kristn)

“It’s easy to pin the film’s woes on the weaknesses of Meily’s script, but Ejercito’s performance carries just as much blame. There is not a shred of humanity in Ejercito’s portrayal of the former president. His performance is as robotic as it is lifeless, hidden behind a wall of empty eyes and insufferable speeches.” (Read full review)

3.5         Nicol Latayan (Tit for Tat)

“I’m not keen about the highly dramatic third act and the predictable ending. It’s just lazy. Giving characters closure does not always have to be happy or peaceful. But for the most part, I was hooked and contented with what I saw.” (Read full review)

3.5         Reel Advice

“While the film had a tendency to resolve conflicts with shouting, cursing and crying, the morality of the character’s actions and the choices they make will make you think hard and think deep.” (Read full review)

3.5         Jen Tuazon (Kristn)

“Great performances by its leads gave One More Try a lot of heart.” (Read full review)

3.0         Rito Asilo (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

“Ruel Bayani’s provocative One More Try is occasionally hobbled by an overlay of melodrama, but the finely nuanced performances turned in by Angel Locsin and Angelica Panganiban help the movie effectively play out its polarizing conflict and the moral questions it raises.”

2.5         Rianne Hill Soriano (Business World Online)

“For a story that, while unoriginal, could have had so much potential, One More Try falls short of delivering anything remarkable in an effort to please the crowd.” (Read full review)

2.5         Katrina Stuart Santiago (GMA News)

“It is humanity that (Locsin) lends to Grace. Womanhood beyond body and sex, without romance, and it is a worthy contemporary portrayal of Pinay that is a joy to watch.” (Read full review)

2.5         Carljoe Javier (Rappler)

“There are things to like about it for sure: good performances, some good writing, some ideas. I just wish that it had been brave enough to explore darker possibilities, had had the guts to try and be realistic and try and say something true.” (Read full review)

2.5         Ivan Thoughts

“While the establishment of One More Try‘s scenario is quite provocative, the film, as it goes along, transitions from interesting to slightly plausible to idiotically preposterous.” (Read full review)

2.5         Kikko Kalabud (Hot for Movies)

“The second half felt too synthetic. It coerces the impression that it should, at all costs, have a happy ending. And that hurt the storyline.” (Read full review)

“Loud, overwritten, everything articulated and revealed, complete with much screaming, slapping and a violent catfight.” (Read full review)

2.0         Carljoe Javier (Rappler)

“It plays to a specific kind of humor, and a specific kind of culture. It draws on an in-thing (fashion industry) and builds a workable comedy around it. Plot doesn’t matter. Tension, not much either. Actors are essentially playing versions of themselves.” (Read full review)

“All this enthusiasm is hobbled by mediocre writing, stale situations, and poor production values.” (Read full review)

2.0         Nicol Latayan (Tit for Tat)

Sisterakas will make you laugh but that’s the only thing you can get from it. A shallow happiness for almost 2 hours and once the credits end, you will simply forget about it.” (Read full review)

1.5          J.I.E. Teodoro (GMA News Online)

“The greatest disgrace of “Sisterakas” is Kris Aquino. Someone should have told her doing comedy is far more difficult than drama or horror. She could not deliver a punch line and her movements were awkward.” (Read full review)

Flames of Love isn’t just bad. It is often despicable. Many films suffer from bad stories or clunky dialogue or a lack of technical expertise. This film already has all that, but it ups the ante with its infantile concept of morality and murky gender politics.” (Read full review)

1.0       Manuel Pangaruy (Tagailog Special)

“I almost walked out after 15 minutes, particularly in a scene that involves a gay looking guy and his girlfriend dismissing pre-marital sex. He said that it’s a love triangle between them and God. The rest of the film is like that, saying no to abortion (good) and for a couple of times, preaching that condoms are not effective. That’s in between scenes that show the character praying ardently. The ‘sermon’ is difficult to swallow especially for a script that seems to challenge reality. The OFW mom for instance is shown putting $1,000 in a snail mail and the money reaches the daughter. There’s nothing much from the acting department either considering the presence of the likes of Christopher de Leon and Lani Mercado. Only exception perhaps is Dina Bonnevie who did great.”

Kalayaan tops 2012 film poll; Nora Aunor takes top acting honors

Kalayaan, prolific filmmaker Adolfo Alix Jr.’s brooding tale of soldiers stationed in picturesque Kalayaan islands, tops Pinoy Rebyu’s 2nd Annual Movie Poll, as voted by 20 film bloggers and journalists, while Nora Aunor’s subtle turn as a barren Badjao midwife in Brillante Mendoza’s Thy Womb is the voters’ overwhelming choice for best lead performance, way ahead of second-placer Eddie Garcia (Bwakaw). kalayaan

Kalayaan stars Thai actor Ananda Everingham in the role of a Filipino soldier assigned to man a military outpost in the disputed Spratly Archipelago. The film patiently documents the soldier’s daily routine and his eventual descent into madness.

Aside from best film, Kalayaan topped four more categories: best director (tied with Lav Diaz for the six-hour Florentina Hubaldo, CTE), best cinematography (by Albert Banzon), best musical score/soundtrack (by Teresa Barrozo), and best scene (for its controversial opening night scene that features a mermaid doing a soldier a sexual favor). Another Alix film, Mater Dolorosa, was cited best ensemble (tied with Vincent Sandoval’s Aparisyon).

Kalayaan bested Colossal, Juan Manuel Alcazaren’s audacious experimental debut feature (2nd best film) and Pascalina, Pam Miras’ unconventional aswang film shot with lo-fi cameras (3rd best film). Colossal and Pascalina also tied for best first feature while Alcazaren’s script for Colossal was voted best screenplay.

Art Acuña’s portrayal of a fearsome police chief in Lawrence Fajardo’s Posas was voted best supporting performance, ahead of Nicholas Varela (Aberya) and Annicka Dolonius (Ang Nawawala).

The moving Paco Larrañaga film Give Up Tomorrow was chosen best documentary, and the director of Pinoy Rebyu’s 2011 best short film, Jon Lazam, repeated the feat as his Nang Gabing Maging Sinlaki ng Puso ang Bato ni Darna topped the best short film category.

4.5       Skilty Labastilla (Young Critics Circle)

“It takes great filmmaking skill to show restraint in a film that tackles heavy themes set in a politically charged atmosphere. Sandoval achieves that and more by respecting the audience to do some thinking for themselves, as well as by gathering a top-notch cast and crew to achieve his vision. If Señorita signalled his arrival as a filmmaker to watch, Aparisyon emphatically confirms his place as one of the vanguards of the new Philippine cinema.”

3.5          Jansen Musico (Pelikula Tumblr)
